Handmade Greeting cards

This silly season I made may own cards and will continue to do so for other special occasions. I wanted to share the tools I’ve been using. It was a gift, a book of fine paper from PURPURS in Latvia. The paper I’m using here is recycled paper hence the beautiful naming of it "Paper with 9 lives".

Not only is it beautiful and sustainable paper but it also has a nifty little function of being perforated, making it perfect for making gift cards!

Trying the 5:2
Spending time during the new years holiday season to get healthy instead of over eating. I’ve been trying out Dr. Michael Mosley’s 5:2 fasting diet which I was inspired to do both because of family and friend testimonies and his amazing  BBC documentary: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xvdbtt_eat-fast-live-longer-hd_shortfilms
So far so good, but I’ve only been going 3 weeks, I’ve been getting creative with fast day food and below is one of my recipes for a snack juice, only 60 kcal per 300ml.

My Tiny Loft Bedroom

I’ve been doing a lot of Airbnb lately, renting out my big room so I’ve resorted to staying in my tiny kitchen sleeping loft. During the day I fold up the mattress and it turns into a teeny tiny living room so that I can study. It’s made me realise how little space I really need to live.  It’s so cute and cosy, I love it.
It’s also pretty perfect for my thesis hibernation period.
Happy German Bank Holiday!

Green Living!

I know I’ve been a bit absent lately but I have an excellent excuse. I’ve been doing research for my thesis (Encouraging Sustainable Consumer Behaviours through Participatory Design) back home in Sydney. I’ve found out some excellent stuff and met some great people all involved in sustainability. It’s so inspiring seeing all the amazing work people are doing; from creating plans for sustainable communities to starting up collaborative consumption sites like openshed.

This was just a quick post to share with you this great little video from Green Villages on making your own small garden anywhere. Once I get back to Berlin I promise to share some more great inspirations that I gathered on my trip back home and of course keep you up to date on my thesis!!

Winter Desert Idea - Cherry Pie (Pita od Višanja)

winter is well upon us and its time to regain all that lost energy spent keeping our bodies warm in the below freezing temperatures. Any excuse to eat desert my friends, any!

So without further a do let me give you my secret for a very simple and easy Cherry Pie or Pita od Višanja which is what it’s called in serbo-croatian and where the recipe comes from.

What you will need:

2 jars of 500g of sour cherries
1/2 cup of sugar (any type)
1/4 cup of vanilla sugar
2 tb spoons of ground cinnamon
1 pack of filo pastry
icing sugar

Method:

Strain the juice from the cherries, place into a mixing bowl and stir in the sugar, vanilla sugar and cinnamon.

Place 2 sheets of filo on a flat dry surface. Put the cherry mixture in the centre making sure you go right up to the edges. Then roll the filo up like a carpet.

Place the rolls of filo with cherry  mixture into a baking pan. Brush the top with egg whites or butter.

Bake in a medium heat oven until the pastry is golden brown.  Then cut the rolls into small slices.

To finish sprinkle with icing sugar until it looks like it got snowed on. Now it’s ready to serve.

This is one of my favourite deserts and its a sure crowd pleaser! Enjoy!

Holiday Snowman Decorations

Still feeling the holiday spirit? Why not make some felted snowmen decorations?!

What you will need:

2 circles of thick felt in white
some beads
thread
yarn

Method:

First sew the two pieces of felt together, you can work through the back as later you can cover it with another piece of felt or fabric.
Sew the beads in for the eyes, nose and mouth. Bead onto some thread through the top of the snowman for hanging. Plat some yarn into a mini scarf and tie around the snowman’s neck and you’re done. Hang them on a tree or give them as late Christmas gifts or for New Year’s presents!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!
